JCT 2011 Design & Build

The £1.4 million Visual Arts Centre at the North East Wakefield Pontefract College was constructed within a live further education environment in just 36 weeks.

The two-storey academy building will specialise in textiles and photography and replaces the old visual arts centre at the sixth form college.

Incorporating a dark/developing room which has black walls with high level lighting, this can be switched between normal and red for the developing process.

The upper floors for the textiles and artwork have floor to roof level windows, which allow lots of natural light to enter the building, there are also glass screens forming separate areas, in order for the light to flood through.A new disabled access ramp was installed, alongside associated external landscaping.

Particular attention has been paid to the acoustics within the new centre as it was built in accordance with the ‘Department for Education & Skills BB93 – Acoustics in School regulation.’
